Chinese candy maker denies Philippine claims of formaldehyde tainting
These news were shocking, especially since I love eating White Rabbit ever since I was a kid. The first thing that I actually tried to remember was if Matthew was or could have eaten the candy, and it made breathe a sigh of relief to realize my son has never had any inclination to sweets, so he doesnt eat candy. Thank goodness!
The BFAD issues a statement that the candy, along with three others, contain formalin, which is used to embalm corpses. According to the news, “
The other three products found to be tainted with formalin are a brand of milk candy made by Romanticfish Food Industry, Bairong Grape Biscuits made by Dongguan Bairong Food Stuff Company and distributed by Goodway Int’l. Trading Corp. and Yong Kang Foods Grape Biscuits made by Dongguan Yongkang Food Company, Ltd.”
However, the company from China which produces the said candy has already released a report that the candies dont contain formalin - citing that if it has, it might have come from the packaging. They also have lambasted how irreponsible the Philippine Press has done to release the news without further investigation.
Can you imagine the damage it has done? Clearly, Filipinos will be wary to eat the candy now, even if proven otherwise. I myself would not eat it, not anymore.
Formalin can cause cancer and leukemia.
