Fertility Problems
It is always ironic that there are more reported abortions in this world and more couples seeking fertility treatments because they want to have a child of their own.
Infertility is a medical condition, and, as more and more insurance companies recognize the need for coverage, more couples will have access to these procedures.
The offices of Randy S. Morris, MD in Chicago and Naperville, Illinois are best known known for their In Vitro Fertilization – IVF – and preimplantation genetic diagnosis – PGD.
What is IVF?
In Vitro Fertilization technically mean “fertilization outside of the body.” While considered an experimental procedure for years, IVF has been a proven way for many couples to build their family. Many insurances are now recognizing the need for insurance coverage for infertility, and some offer partial coverage for the procedures leading up to IVF, medications, and the actual egg retrieval process.
What is PGD?
PGD or preimplantation genetic diagnosis is sometimes also referred to as preimplantation testing.
PGD is made possible through the use of IVF (in vitro fertilization). In short, a woman is first given fertility drugs to stimulate the development of multiple eggs in her ovaries. She is monitored during this time with blood tests and ultrasounds. At the appropriate time, the eggs are removed in a process known as an (oocyte) egg retrieval. Once the eggs are removed, they are inspected under the microscope to determine which eggs are mature and normal appearing. Each of these eggs will then have a single sperm injected into them.
