My Hawaiian Tweener

Matthew with his Hawaiian outfit for their Field Demonstration last February (yes, I am that late with my updates, bear with me):

He is turning 10 this year and in two to three years, his male hormones will be in full force. I would love to hope that he gets my skin or else I would be on the lookout for the best acne treatment there is. It’s a good thing that his godmother would be a practicing dermatologist by then. It would not get THAT expensive.

Gift of 2009

Finally, Matthew got his PSP last New Year’s:

It was reward for him for being such a god boy at school and for bearing with Martha all these times. Heehee.

So he basically does nothing but play with it, inside or outside the house.

No he doesnt play with it 24/7. He needs to charge it, you know :P . We just have one rule: Do not let grades suffer and be a good boy and it continues to stay with him even on weekdays. Meanwhile, the husband, as crazy as he is about getting a PSP of his own, just spends time in the gym working out (naks!). He told me to check out some supplements at http://www.proteinpowder.net and see if they are legit.

The holidays always never officially starts AFTER Matthew’s birthday. I never wrap presents before his birthday, simply because I want to get excited for his birthday first.

For his birthday, he wanted two things: a trip to Enchanted Kingdom and a PSP. Unfortunately, he didn’t get neither (But he got the PSP as a Christmas gift!) but he was able to get his other wish: PIZZA ALL DAY.

December 20th after my retreat we went to Yellow Cab at 10 in the evening to eat pizza (which we finished – us four, thank you very much. With side dishes!). On his birthday we had Pizza Hut for lunch, and thankfully, he let me buy him chocolate cake so I can take pictures :) . He also was able to offer his singing voice as part of the choir during Simbang Gabi – perfect thanksgiving!

Some pictures (notice Edil lost weight, as of the moment he is back to gym to make muscle again, this time no bodybuilding supplements!)

He is Nine!

I never knew how much love my heart could hold, until someone called me “Mommy” – I became a Mommy today, nine years ago! Happy Birthday Matthew!

Of Time and Relativity.

“Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. THAT’S relativity.” ~ Albert Einstein

My son and I had a discussion on time and relativity last week. He is the type who asks what time is it every 15 minutes, especially when we are travelling. He asks what time  he got up, how long is cooking time for his favorite dinner and would often keep the timer of a movie on so he can see how long the movie was. He wants to measure everything by minutes and admittedly, that’s one of his obsessive-compulsions: He needs to stick around a rigid schedule or else he would feel like the day is a complete waste of time.

So we told him we would give him a watch so he would stop pestering us each time asking what time it is – which then brought us to the question, how does one measure time? And when fazed with a question like that, how do YOU answer that?

Frequency Control Devices are what would have done the trick. Being the nerd that I am, I actually researched about it and found out that timepieces, like radios, need crystal oscillators which look like this:

These actually stabilize everything, making sure timepieces clock away every second without losing any beat.

And you might also be amazed to discover that these devices are used in computer peripherals, industrial instrumentation, oil drilling, geothermal, commercial space, LAN/WAN, optical networks, process controls, telecommunications and wireless products!

035Last Saturday, November 28th, my son finally took his second sacrament – he was able to receive his First Communion. We treat this with very high importance as we try to practice going to mass every Sunday religiously.

As usual, I am thankful that his school hasn’t disappointed the parents – especially me. Weeks leading to their rites, we parents went to recollection plus the kids had one too before confession. We also were present during their recollection too. It might take a lot of time for us than required and I am thankful I get to be there for him even if his Dad couldn’t because of work. (Again, one more reason to be grateful for my work even if I am at a burn out).

We were there early as the school always starts on time. They were given their tunics with gold cross necklaces and the chapel was beautiful and well-ventilated. The priest who did the rites was just my age so he was really able to get down to the level of the kids to the point of being cool ;) . Matthew was the one who delivered the Thanksgiving message after. It was a beautiful event and I am thankful I got a babysitter for Martha that morning. All our eyes and attention was just focused on our firstborn (which rarely happens these days!)

Parents were requested to be in white.

Afterwards, we treated Matthew to his favorite eatery: Teriyaki Boy!

His Lolo gave him a cross necklace as a present:

Which pales in comparison to what we got him – a set of Archie comic books (hahaha!) – I should have gotten him something related to the event no? He wanted his own laptop but he doesnt stand a chance to owning one until he reached high school (after that he can even have an industrial computer if he wants – I dont want him being an internet addict so soon)

Matthew (and Edil) got lucky during Dom’s party because they were able to see WanLu perform. We saw him on TV because we watch Talentadong Pinoy and I heard about him from fellow n@wies in e-mail threads.

Matthew was such a huge fan – and it got better because he was called onstage to assist in one of his acts. WanLu was hilarious (he didnt need acne treatment as I initially thought when I saw him on TV *wink*), my stomach hurt too much from laughing especially from this scene:

Kudos to the nannies because they were so game!

Edil was starstruck, really – he would not admit it pero he really loved WanLu, hahaha!

Saints’ Parade

Remember my post last year about Matthew’s school principal’s view on Trick or Treating? Apparently, those views still hold true today because as most schools did Halloween Parades and some serious trick or treating, they did something very apt for that day – they did a Saints’ Parade!

Basically, they were told to come in their saint’s costume, and make sure that their chosen saint’s biography is something they know by heart. He first chose St. Francis of Assisi (we could not find a brown abbito) or Padre Pio (that would be easier since he can just wear what he wore below and just have a beard and a trademark black glove for the stigmata) but in the end we were choosing between Saint Dominic or Saint Joseph the Worker.

Numerous google searches prompted me to decide to have him go as Saint Joseph.

He told me that their parade was fun because afterwards they had a picnic and then some sharing about the saints. There was one who came a centurion (Roman Soldier) – who became a saint (Maximillian I think). Girls came with elaborate rose headpieces (St. Rose – something) and they had awards for Best in Costumes.

Their parade was something I commend his school for doing – because they increased awareness about the saints in kids. Now, when last year Matthew was blindly following his principal’s order not to go trick or treat, he just takes damn if you, damn if you don’t attitude. He told me trick or treating must be OK because his Lolo is OK with it, and even the BNP celebrates it :P As long as there is no devilish acts and ceremonies (video surveillance equipment would be needed!) Halloween parties *must* be alright! ~ you go Tuting!
