It seems that our journey of finding a vehicle that can fit our budget will never end. We have one irresistible offer come mid-year and while our hearts say yes I am quite scared of all the monthly dues (read: debt!) that will entail. Though, financially speaking, if we really save and the flow of work is steady (which is something I cannot control) we can afford it. I have a friend who names his cars the way he names his kids, if ever he will have one. See, he is still single and therefore very eligible, given that he is handsome, educated and is stable – his car buy and sell business plus repair shop is doing good.

There is one car he has a hard time letting go of, and it doesn’t surprise me that when it needed to “rest”, he kept an essential part of it and transferred it to his new “baby” – a white Ford Escape SUV. He transferred the name plate of his old car to his new one, and up to that point I never knew it was possible.

Cherished Registrations are what they are called. It is associated with classic dateless registrations. Many of these number plates have often been owned by families for decades or have a high sentimental value.  With the rising demand to own a cherished number plate, prices have increased year on year. We have been quite vocal about our wish to replace our vehicle by the end of the year. We are saving and praying hard for it and it is constantly included in our husband and wife discussions every week. First, money and expenses aside, we prefer a big vehicle. We want an SUV, minivan or van simply because we are a big family, literally and figuratively. My kids have a strange and funny habit of falling asleep five minutes into a drive, whether we are travelling to the mall or into the city. It would be better if they can sleep comfortably. Speaking of safety, I just think it will be safe if I drive a bigger vehicle.

I don’t know if we can afford one though. We want to get over the car acquisition so we can move to other things, like buying a house, or travelling. The husband and I were talking the other night about the kids and we both cannot believe that our eldest is turning ten this year! Almost a decade of being parents – WOW! We didn’t get to celebrate his seventh birthday with a party (It is said that you should celebrate a kid’s birthday when they turn 1, 7 and for ladies, when they turn 18, for guys, 21) because he didn’t want to, so we want to make this year a little special for him before he turns 11 and puberty starts and he gets to see birthday parties as more of social obligations than chances to have fun. We actually have a plan in the works and we need a lot of prayers to make sure it pushes through – so if ever you are reading this, please say a prayer for us (even if you do not know what it is yet!).

Maybe when he turns 18 or graduates from high school, he can have a bigger birthday present, like a car maybe? Edil never received such gift so maybe our life improves and we can give him one. I am talking about our car here. June is the month where car registrations are renewed every year, and this is also when it is scheduled for an oil change and a semi-annual car check-up. It was a bit expensive for us, as June is also the month where the kids go to school and in this school year, we have two kids now going to school. So it was a bit overwhelming for us but thankfully we were able to pull everything through without so much of a hitch. I need to thank my lucky stars and the Big Man Up There for the steady stream of work these days.

Anyway, when the car’s registration was renewed we were told that we would need to have the car checked and inspected next year, which would mean that its registration would double as the vehicle has a new machine. At least we don’t need a new car plate. I have always been curious how DVLA Number Plates are formed. Here, we have three letters and three numbers. The DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) in the UK has a new style of number plate introduced in September 2001. The arrangement of the now is 2 letters, then 2 digits, then 3 more letters. The most desirable of these new plate designs form the names of boys or girls names or the type of employment the buyer is in. Just remember when designing your  plate the letters, I, Q, Z, cannot be used in the formation of your plate design and you cannot apply a number plate to a vehicle if it makes the vehicle appear newer than it is.
