I’m in the hunt for books for my kids. I can easily get books for the princess, but what usually is the reading material of kids aged 7years old these days? According to market research, most in that age group are in Grade 1. Are they too old for fairy tales? What stories should I encourage Matthew to read? Is he too young for paperbacks? I like to hone his reading skills and get him involved with reading since I am noticing his addiction to Pokemon is increasing. I’m not against it as long as his studies and study habits are not affected. But I also would like to give him more options or hobbies.

Any suggestions?

hi aggie! naku, medyo lagi akong nakaka encounter ng mga ganyang questions since my moms were and are both professors. I guess when picking out books or Matthew, maybe you can assess first his reading comprehension level. He may be 7 years old but have a reading comprehension level of that of a 9 year old. You’ll be surprised na a lot of kids are either behind or ahead of their years - so that can guide you better. You can then buy books that he won’t find “boring” or “too easy” and at the same time not buy books that might be “too advanced” for him at the moment. It would also be good to pick up kung anong subjects ang hilig niyang basahin - when I was young, addicted ako sa Archie comics - my mom couldn’t get me to read the think classics - so what she bought me were those literature classics pero comics style! o diba? :) Pero at his age, 7, I think you mga young adult paperbacks are puwede na - when I was young I know I was always on the lookout for books that were awarded the Newberry Medal, etc. kasi yun yung mga award winning books (so sure ako na maganda yung story hehehe). hope this helps! :)

    hi!

Archie comic books are entertaining, use fairly simple conversational English, and are not too hard to find. I personally picked up a lot of my English skills from reading Archies. : )

Grimm’s fairy tales are okay too coz they are not too babyish and often teach good lessons. They usually can be bought as a collection so its pretty much just one-time spending.

Hubby recommends the series Asterix… (can’t remember the whole name of the hero. Only thing I do remember is Asterix) Another one is the Captain Underpants series.

rin tin tin are also cool since it has a tv equivalent so its easier for kids to imagine the stories.

Don’t know if Matthew likes suspense but my Nona and bro Miggy collected R.L. Stine books for a bit. The “Geronimo Stilton” series is also pretty good.

Angela! Ikaw pala ung Tesoro, it didn’t cross my mind to associate you with your married name, hehehe. Thanks for the recommendations. Ill let him try Archie muna. I dont think suspense will work out for him — masyado malakas imagination nun baka lalo maging matatakutin, LOL.

Hi aggie. Was just wondering if you were still planning on letting Mato try reading Archie comic books.
I’m disposing of my collection na kasi and figured if you’re interested, I may be able to save you a few bucks and just give you a few comic books you can try to start him on.
Kesa naman bumili ka pa ng pang trial niya :) (new archies ngayon cost between P150-220/pc)
Just let me know if you are interested and let’s see about how I could get these to you.

    Love reading your blog :)

just thought of something. If you have some stuff nila matthew and martha that you’re packing away for charity, i’ll gladly take them off your hands in exchange for some archies (like 20 pcs or so).

my mom runs a foundation/halfway house kasi for kids sa may Alfonso (Cavite) so clothes and other kid’s things are always welcome. She shares resources with the Augustinian Sisters’ convent/orphanage in Tagaytay.

Sort of like my “junk” for yours :)

    whaddaya think?
